Idenea's working condition evaluation tool is an interface on tablet enabling ergonomists to evaluate in situ work toughness regarding machines and workstations.

The tool then summarizes data into machine and workstation evaluation cards using icons, colours and charts to communicate work toughness. Evaluation cards then serve as a way to create changes in the factory, by raising awareness and creating a discussion around well-being at work and injury cost reduction between ergonomists, workers and medical staff.

Idénéa Ergonomie has created an ergonomic grid to evaluate work toughness composed of a list of ergonomic standards applying to specific machines and workstations in a given manufacturing factory. Ergonomists evaluate working conditions by observing and by asking questions to workers on machines and workstation.

Ergonomists then report their evaluation on an Excel grid but they have no way to synthesize their evaluation to share it with workers and occupational health doctors. Additionally, ergonomic evaluation are hard to read, not centralized and there is no outlook on how many machines and workstations are remaining to be evaluated.

Machines and workstations are evaluated separately. Workstations evaluation are composed of evaluation of machines.

Ergonomists start evaluating by using a blank visualization grid. This grid shows which standards have been evaluated and what is to complete to finish the evaluation. Ergonomists have choices between several standards toughness, going from green, to orange, to red. Each standards is shown as an icon and an evaluation chart is updated in real time.  Ergonomists can also write notes and take pictures using the tablet’s camera.

VISUALIZING WORKING CONDITIONS

Visualizing working conditions

On the visualization part, completed evaluations are shown as evaluation cards using a visual grid to understand the work toughness at a glance.

To make it understandable and skimmable, the grid is similar for each card; colours and charts give quick informations about the machine or workstation. When looking for details, each square represents an icons giving details about the ergonomic standard regarding the machine or workstation.

When starting the project, it was clear to me that the working conditions evaluation tool needed to accommodate two moments:

  • Entering information about workstation and related machines (data input)
  • Reading information (data output)

Ultimately, both moments would help ergonomists and occupational health therapists in making informed decisions. Additionally, data output would be revealed to workers in order to raise awareness about their working environment.

I started by thinking about how to understand information about work toughness in an easy and skimmable way, and if people wanted, to dig further into the card’s detail. Together with the client, we selected the evaluation card’s design.

By wireframing, I started to structure the interface in order to create such evaluation card. I had to figure out ways to make the evaluation quick and straightforward in-situ. This resulted in creating a blank visualisation grid that ergonomists can complete with data input progression visible at a glance.

USER TESTING

USER TESTING

I conducted user testings with factory medical staff and ergonomists in situ, walking around one section of the factory, with a digital prototype on tablet. I prepared user testing, observed and interviewed users. This wizard of Oz testing proved to be valuable to improve some of the features by gathering users feedbacks.

ROLE & REFLECTION

I started working on this project during my one-month internship at Idénéa Ergonomie. At the end of the month, I pitched our idea of a working condition evaluation tool together with an ergonomist. I focused on a tangible output for our client and put forth ideas and data visualisation moodboards on having a visual card facilitating reading working condition at a glance. Our client decided to move the project forward and I started my apprenticeship only working on this project.

During this project, I was the design referent and user advocate in designing the tool. Being the only designer made me tackle all aspects of working on a design project: pitching, presenting, concept sketching, iterating, meeting with clients, users and ergonomists, coding and working with a programmer.
