CONCEPT

CONCEPT

COPD can leave people feeling breathless even during the simplest of daily activities. With no cure, patients are encouraged to monitor their breathing and perform breathing exercises on a daily basis to delay progression of the disease.

Bolle is a home breathing assistant that offers a less intrusive way of monitoring and keeping track of peak flow levels. Additionally, Bolle incorporates a tailored breathing exercise programme, connected directly with the user’s doctor, to help patients manage their disease over time.

Bolle combines an improved peak flow meter with a breathing exercise assistant to improve the ability for patients to understand their airways better and to practise breathing exercises as part of a daily routine.

TECHNOLOGY/ Bolle’s microphone is a less intrusive monitoring system that would feel more welcome in the home. A microphone is as accurate as traditional peak flow meters but need no mouthpiece therefore making the device feel much less medical.

Bolle is a peak flow meter that improves the ability for patients to understand their airways and keep track of their progress much more easily, making it simpler to be part of a daily routine. Bolle reminds patient with sound and offers a color-coded reading of peak flow meter tailored to the patient’s own airways condition.

STEP 2/ TAILORED BREATHING EXERCISES

Bolle is a breathing assistant providing sound and light feedback to improve patient’s ability to practise their breathing exercises. Bolle’s main body fills and empties in set durations; one rise represents one inhale and one fall, one exhale. This action makes it easier for patients to keep in rhythm and be confident in the knowledge that they are training their lungs correctly and safely.

Bolle is connected to doctors who can tailor the exercise programme, making progression safer and more suitable to their patients, so they can progress in comfort, with confidence.

I found the breathing techniques gave immediate relief to some of my symptoms.

Bolle is a medical device that feels less medical and doesn’t necessarily need to be hidden away in the home. Therefore, people would be more likely to remember their daily routine. Additionally, Bolle alerts the patient when it is time for her peak flow and breathing exercise.

Bolle transforms a painful experience of practising breathing techniques into a positive experience as wave sounds and motion help patient in breathing in a calm rhythm.

RESEARCH

We explored the topic of COPD by doing secondary research to better understand its key issues. We obtained insights from people with COPD by reading their personal blogs.

We also discovered about rehabilitation center where people learn to manage their illness on a daily basis by using tailored breathing techniques.

After several rounds of ideation including sketching and mood boarding, we settled on our final concept.

SOUND TESTING

SOUND TESTING

Different types of feedback were tested with users and sound was found to be an important factor in keeping up with a rhythm.

This resulted in wave like sound and light being used to help guiding users through their inhaling and exhaling exercises. Waves sounds were strongly linked with a calming, rhythmic effect and was found to be easy to keep in time with, even when not paying attention.

ROLE & REFLECTION

It would be interesting in envisioning how consumer healthcare product can be a link between patient and medical staff and explore in details the interaction between the patient and her doctor.

After researching and ideating as a group. I created sound and light patterns in team with my IxD classmate. Our main focus was to work on user experience of such device. I advocated for a device that would feel less medical and we took this opportunity to create ideas and to craft experience details related to sound and light interaction staying away from designing medical screens. We designed sound and light focusing on its meaning and its feeling for people. Lights and sound are powerful aspects in a home device to create a connection to people through a story.

I was in charge of communicating our concept with a video and worked on the narrative and on film editing and shooting.
